Department of Pediatric Surgery and Urology

The department was started in the hospital by the founder Prof. Dr. M.S. Ramakrishnan, who was a pioneer in the field of Pediatric surgery.

It is a busy speciality offering advanced tertiary care referral services and efficient day surgical care for routine and minor surgical problems. At present, over 1200 surgeries are being done every year in the fields of neonatal, oncological, gastroenterological, hepatobiliary, urological, thoracic and laparoscopic surgeries.

We treat children with complex congenital and acquired conditions with utmost care and compassion.

We offer urodynamic assessment and management of urinary bladder conditions like neurogenic bladder, PUCV and incontinence related to dysfunction of the bladder. Management of full range of urological conditions related to kidneys, ureter and genital organs including hydronephrosis, hydroureter, hypospadias is offered.

Advanced reconstructive procedures as well as thoracoscopic surgery for chest conditions is offered.

There is round the clock emergency on call cover being provided by pediatric surgical residents and on-call consultants. Surgeries are performed in well equipped, modern theatres with experienced pediatric anaesthetists for safe anaesthesia and surgery.

We offer 24/7 management of surgical emergencies, including the non-surgical (pneumatic) reduction of intussusception and management of pediatric trauma.

In the field of education, we run a DNB training program in pediatric surgery. Our students have won many accolades in these examinations. The department also maintains an active profile in research and publications both in the national and international front. Various workshops to demonstrate new techniques are conducted periodically.
